Looking for the best electric chainsaw? First, determine what you need a chainsaw for. Then decide what type and model is the best chainsaw for you and your task at hand.
Electric chainsaws are a good alternative to more cumbersome gas-powered chainsaws. They are ideal for those that have infrequent and/or light duty cutting and trimming, lack experience using a chainsaw, or do not have the strength to start and operate a heavier gas-powered model.
The electric chainsaws are clean, quiet, and affordable. They are not for heavy logging but surely have enough power to accomplish most home, yard, and garden cutting tasks. They start easily and are less expensive to buy and operate than gas-powered models.
Advantages of an Electric Chainsaw
Less expensive to buy and operate than gas-powered models
Environmentally friendly, no fumes or emissions
Lightweight and portable
Easy to start and operate
Disadvantages of an Electric Chainsaw

Before Buying an Electric Chainsaw
Before buying an electric chainsaw, review the products’ recommended uses and constraints, specifications, and initial and operating costs.
If you have small to mid-sized trimming, pruning, branch cutting, or small shrub or tree falling on your to-do list, an electric chainsaw is an ideal solution. Electric chainsaws make quick work out of tasks that would normally take up the better part of one’s morning or afternoon!
You can’t go wrong pricewise buying an electric chainsaw. There is a wide variety of types, models, and features to choose from. Some higher-end electric chainsaws are more powerful and in the upper $250+ range, but as a rule, electric chainsaw models are simple tools, cheap to make, and less expensive than gas-powered ones to buy. There is no maintenance cost or fuel to purchase. Electric chainsaws are, without a doubt, practical and economical purchases.
Each type of electric chainsaw has its limitations. A corded electric chainsaw, for instance, requires a power source and appropriate extension cord. It is unlikely a corded chainsaw will be much help in the woods or off-grid areas, unless you have a generator to run it. A cordless electric saw, or gas-powered chainsaw, might be more useful in these situations.
If you have many projects that require extended chainsaw use, a cordless, battery-powered chainsaw may not be the correct choice unless you purchase several batteries for backup and have them fully-charged and ready for quick use.
Easy to Use
A major selling point is how easy electric saws are to start and operate, compared to their gas-powered counterparts. Electric chainsaws typically start with the push of a button after they are either plugged in (corded chainsaws) or the lithium-ion battery pack is installed (cordless chainsaws).
Electric chainsaws are lighter weight than gas-powered chainsaws. You don’t need a lot of strength to effectively operate one. The lighter weight also reduces fatigue, which allows you to go longer and get more things done!
Because electric chainsaws do not run on a gas/combustion motor, they require no maintenance. Electric chainsaws are not complex tools. The bar requires oiling, but on many electric saws there’s an automatic bar oil system. This alleviates maintenance.
Although electric chainsaws are not as powerful as gas-powered chainsaws, they by no means are slouches. However, the more power you want from your electric chainsaw, the more you will probably have to pay.
Corded electric chainsaws are more powerful than cordless ones, but either type of electric chainsaw successfully makes quick work of small jobs. Less power reduces overall functionality, but with that in mind, you can choose the right chainsaw for the job you need to do. If you have tasks that require a heavy-duty saw like cutting large rounds or falling larger tree, you may opt for a more powerful gas-powered tool.
Corded or Cordless?
After you have made the decision to purchase an electric chainsaw, you need to decide which type fits your needs. You have more mobility and convenience with a cordless, battery-powered chainsaw. To ensure you always have power, you may need to buy one or two backup batteries.
If you anticipate a lot of cutting, you may have to factor in downtime while batteries recharge. The alternative, providing there is a power source nearby, is to opt for a corded electric chainsaw that keeps on running as long as it’s plugged in.
The chain attaches and runs along the outside of the bar. The bar is measured from the outer tip of the bar to the base of the bar at the body. Electric chainsaw bars typically range from 10” to 16”. The longer the bar length, the larger diameter cutting you can do. However, you do not want to cut logs, branches, and other brush that is exactly as wide as the bar. The bar should be at least 2” to 3” wider than what you are actually cutting. Essentially, your cuts should be 2” to 3” shallower than your chainsaw’s total cutting depth.
Select a bar length long enough to accomplish your cutting. You will need a longer (16”) bar if you intend to cut trees. For larger timber, get an even longer (18”) bar. A shorter bar will suffice if you are only cutting up limbs to be chipped or for firewood.
Cordless Electric Chainsaw
Cordless battery-powered electric chainsaws are not as powerful as electric models but they are freely mobile, just as maintenance-free, and they get the job done. They also do not need a power source or extension cord that can get tangled, wrapped up, or trip you! They capably cut small branches and limbs.
They are ideal for quick trimming. It is recommended to have a rechargeable battery or two on hand. Each battery typically gives you about 1- 2 hours of use. So you may need multiple batteries for a longer day of cutting. You will also need to ensure they are fully charged.
Lithium-ion batteries, which replaced nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cad) ones are newer battery technology that offers greater and longer-lasting performance. They are lightweight, which does not add to the heaviness of the chainsaw. Some of the extremely light weight batteries may have a shorter battery life, however.
Lithium-ion batteries’ selling point is their ability to retain power even as the battery is being used and losing its charge. Where it took nearly 12 hours for the old Ni-Cad batteries to recharge, it only takes a little more than an hour for a lithium-ion battery to recharge. In the past lithium-ion cordless tools used electronics to control battery output. That is now the responsibility of the computer chip within the tool’s brushless motor.
Cordless electric chainsaws are not as powerful as gas chainsaws are, but their voltage and amp hours give them ample power and endurance to help you complete your task. Battery voltage alone does not determine the amount of power your cordless chainsaw has.Rather, it is the brushless motor’s computer chip that transfers the voltage output that balances high power and heat management for the lithium-ion cells that decides maximum output. As a result, 80-volt cordless electric chainsaws, for example, can typically outlast most other electric models.
Even with a cordless electric chainsaw, you must keep the bar oiled to maintain smooth operation. Constant metal-on-metal friction can cause your chain to break when the bar is not adequately lubricated to ensure smooth operation. An automatic bar oiler option that continually applies oil to the bar is a time-saving feature you may want to have included on your cordless chainsaw.
Friction causes the chain to come loose from the bar, which requires stopping and tightening your chain before you can continue cutting. Rather than having to stop to manually tighten your chain, opt for a cordless chainsaw model that has a toolless tensioning dial feature that allows you to tighten the chain without digging around for a screwdriver or tensioning tool.
Corded Electric Chainsaw
Corded electric chainsaws are not as powerful as gas-powered models but they are more maintenance-free. They can also capably cut larger and sturdier logs better than comparable cordless battery-powered chainsaws, closer to the ground. You will need a power source within a reasonable distance of your project (i.e: 100 feet), however. Your power source and extension cord are probably the most important elements surrounding your corded electric chainsaw operation.
A durable extension cord to get power to your electric chainsaw is imperative. You should not use an extension cord any longer than 100 feet. Otherwise it could impact your power supply. The longer your extension cord is the less capacity it has to transfer power. Also watch that the cord does not get tangled in brush or wrapped around an object that could trip you or unplug your chainsaw in mid-cut.Do not cut corners when it comes to buying a correct extension cord for your electric chainsaw.
• Do not necessarily buy the cheapest extension cord.
• Be sure it is marked (W) for outdoor use or (S) for indoor use.
• Be sure it is UL (or ETL or CSA) approved.
• Match the cord’s wire gauge and length to your chainsaw’s amperage (amps).
More powerful electric chainsaws are typically 12 – 15 amps. So you might purchase a 100 ft. 10 gauge, or a 50 ft. 12 gauge, extension cord to run your 7 amp – 12 amp electric chainsaw.Less powerful electric chainsaws are typically 7– 12 amps. So you might purchase a 100 ft. 12 gauge, or a 50 ft. 14 gauge, extension cord to run your 7 amp – 12 amp electric chainsaw.
Once you get started, you do not want to stop to oil your bar or tighten your chain. You must keep the bar lubricated to maintain smooth operation without fear of breaking your chain from the constant metal-on-metal friction. An automatic bar oiler option continually applies oil to the bar without you needing to stop and manually do it.
Keeping your chain in good tension is also necessary to keep cutting. Friction causes the chain to come loose from the bar. Rather than stopping to tighten your chain manually, before buying, check your desired electric chainsaw model for a toolless tensioning feature that allows you to turn a dial positioned next to the bar, which tightens it for you.
Choosing the Best Electric Chainsaw
l you can handle a particular size, balance, and weight chainsaw can also influence what model you’d be most comfortable using. Where you plan on using the saw (Is there a power source nearby?) may also be a factor when you decide on a corded or cordless model. Generally, size, price, and desired features influence what type and model you choose.
Typically price is a primary factor. Our budget might drive it, but it can also denote a chainsaw’s overall durability. Some less expensive products may operate easily and efficiently for a time, and then break down with few or no replacement parts available. So, a cheap (corded) electric chainsaw may be tempting but may not continue peak performance or last a very long time. On the other hand, a cordless battery-operated chainsaw may be more expensive initially, including the cost of spare chargers and batteries, but as technology improves and consumer interest and use increases, overall costs will begin to decrease.
In general: an inexpensive $50 to $75 corded electric chainsaw is a good tool for trimming and removing small diameter (1”- 2”) limbs. Essentially these chainsaws function similarly to manual loppers, only with more ease.
A basic corded multi-purpose in the $95 to $120 range is a good addition to your gardening shed or landscaping project. It can trim as well as cut rounds, boards, etc.
A corded or cordless chainsaw in the $150 to $200 range is a substantial tool for a homeowner, which provides power and multi-tasking usefulness. There are many well-made, durable corded chainsaws in this price range, as well as a variety of premium cordless models.
Powerful, top-rated electric chainsaws that cost more than $250 include the most powerful cordless models. They are made to take on about any task. High quality electric chainsaw effectively tackles more than just home projects. Cordless models in particular are good alternatives to gas-powered chainsaws that are regularly used.
What you intend to use the chainsaw for determines the size of the bar you will need.
• A 12” electric chainsaw bar is suitable for trimming bushes or small, spindly tree limbs.
• A longer 14” bar is desirable if you plan on cutting small firewood rounds (that will not be split) or limbs that are several inches (approx. 3” – 6” diam.).
• A 16” bar is a general purpose size that can capably fall a tree. Most chainsaws with bars larger than 16” are gas-powered.
A major selling point of corded and cordless chainsaws is their no-muss, no-fuss, instant start. Plug it in or attach the lithium battery and go!
Automatic Bar Oiling – is a huge time-saving advantage. All chainsaw bars need to be oiled regularly to reduce the friction of metal-to-metal operation. While some models require filling and pressing a button to manually oil, others have an automatic oiling system that not only alleviates the need to stop to oil the bar, but also extends the life of the chain. Cordless chainsaws with automatic bar oilers ensure oil is constantly being applied to the bar.
Automatic and Toolless Chain Tensioning – allows you to adjust the tightness of the chain faster and more conveniently. Automatic tensioning also prevents over-tightening the chain, which extends your chain’s life.
Current Limiters – these are a good feature that ensures you will not burn out your electric chainsaw’s motor due to a power overload.
Brushless Motors – are very durable and reduce the chainsaw’s operation noise. (Battery-powered cordless models are naturally quieter).
Safety tips for using best electric chainsaw
Safety begins by comparing the top brands, their models and features, warranties, and construction to find high quality, the most durable, safest, and most reliable equipment for a fair and reasonable price.
Thoroughly read the Operation Manual that accompanies your electric chainsaw and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the tool’s preparation, operation, adjustment, and maintenance.
Operation kickback is a prime safety concern when operating a chainsaw. Electric chainsaws are typically less powerful than gas-powered models and beneficially have built-in safety chains to avert kickback risks. However, alertness and preparedness are required before using your corded or cordless chainsaw. No one is immune to potential chainsaw accidents! It is important that your electric chainsaw is the right size for the job. Also include appropriate safety clothing and eye, ear, and head protection on your list.
Wear proper protective clothing (long pants, chaps), goggles to avoid eye injury from dust and flying cutting debris, and ear protection (muffs or earplugs) to protect your hearing from constant chainsaw noise.
Wear substantial leather work gloves to protect your hands from scratches or cuts and get a better and more comfortable grip on the chainsaw and the materials you are cutting.
Wear sturdy work boots, preferably steel-toed, to protect your foot if cut materials fall on it or if the chainsaw blade bucks or you miss your planned cutting target.
Electric chainsaw operation safety should also include:
